Total loss records guide

Organize total-loss and vehicle-value paperwork after a crash.

If your vehicle may be a total loss after an accident, the paperwork can pile up quickly: valuation reports, repair estimates, payoff letters, tow bills, rental receipts, photos, claim notes, and medical records. This guide helps injured drivers keep those records review-ready.

How to make total-loss paperwork review-ready

  1. Save the valuation packet. Keep the insurer letter, valuation report, comparable vehicles, repair estimate, title/registration, claim number, adjuster contact, and any deadline notes together.
  2. Separate property-damage costs from injury records. Track tow/storage, rental, transportation, deductible, payoff, and repair paperwork while also keeping medical bills, treatment notes, symptoms, and missed-work records organized.
  3. Photograph and label vehicle evidence. Save crash photos, damage photos, tow-yard photos, repair-shop documents, and any dashcam or witness details with dates and short captions.
  4. Record loan, lease, and gap details. If there is a lender, lease, payoff, or gap-coverage issue, store the paperwork and contact information without assuming what coverage applies.
  5. Do not overstate what vehicle damage proves. A total-loss notice can be important paperwork, but it does not automatically prove fault, injury severity, qualification, coverage, claim value, or outcome.
  6. Use the free-review form when ready. Include the accident basics, injury symptoms, state, ZIP, timing, attorney status, fault details, treatment status, vehicle status, and a short description of your records.
