7-step car accident checklist

  1. Get medical help first. If there is pain, dizziness, numbness, confusion, or visible injury, prioritize medical care. Some injuries can feel worse hours or days later.
  2. Document the scene if it is safe. Take photos of vehicle positions, damage, road conditions, license plates, insurance cards, and visible injuries.
  3. Get the report or incident number. Save the police report number, responding agency, officer information, and any exchange forms.
  4. Keep every insurance message. Save claim numbers, adjuster names, emails, texts, settlement offers, and voicemail details.
  5. Track injury impact. Keep notes about symptoms, appointments, prescriptions, missed work, childcare issues, and transportation problems.
  6. Avoid guessing about fault or case value. Fault, insurance coverage, injuries, treatment, and state-specific rules can all affect next steps.
  7. Request a free review if you want help understanding options. The review request takes about two minutes and does not obligate you to hire anyone.
